[Veritas Alpha = Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] This year, the high school with the highest number of students enrolled in four-year overseas universities was clearly KMLA. According to the nationwide post-graduation pathways data published in late November on the Korean Educational Development Institute’s (KEDI) Education Statistics Service, 43 students were recorded as having enrolled in overseas universities as of April 1.
Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies (HAFS) and Cheongshim International Academy followed with 42 students each, while Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages (GAFL) recorded 31. These four schools were the only ones to produce more than 30 overseas university enrollees.
At first glance, admission results in the range of 30–40 students may not appear particularly remarkable. However, the picture changes significantly when considering the actual pool of applicants aiming for overseas university admission. This is because the overseas university enrollment rate compared to the applicant pool reached virtually 100%: HAFS at 100% (43 enrolled out of 43 applicants), Cheongshim at 100% (42 out of 42), KMLA at 98% (43 out of 44), and GAFL at 97% (31 out of 32). In other words, nearly all students in the overseas university applicant pool—after receiving close to 200 duplicate acceptances—ultimately enrolled at overseas universities.
When counting total admissions including duplicate acceptances, the ranking was KMLA (198), HAFS (177), Cheongshim (152), and GAFL (70). The competitive landscape among these four schools, each operating dedicated international programs for overseas university preparation, has continued in much the same way.
Overseas university enrollment figures are based on the data as of April 1, but additional acceptances reported by schools afterward were also reflected. For example, Cheongshim initially recorded 37 overseas university enrollees as of April 1, but the total increased to 42 by December after five more students were added.
