Interview with Kim Joon-ha
2230 Lee Hyn Kyung

When you go into the Art room in the student hall, you will find a lot of art work. Among them, there are works that stand out as they resemble masterpieces of famous artists, but somehow different in their own ways. Kim Joon-ha in 3rd grade is the student that created this art work. For a student in a foreign language school, it seems quite unique. For those whowant to know his story, we decided to interview him.
(T represents Topnotch, and K represents Kim Joon-ha)
T: Hello, we are from Topnotch. Before going on, we would like to thank you for letting us interview you even though you don’t have much time, being a 3rd grader. We were actually asked to interview you by the request of the fan of your art work in the art room. What is the purpose or motive of your art work?
K: When I was working on that piece, I was full of enthusiasm of creating art work. But I did not set up my own, solid style for I was still an amateur. So I decided to mimic masterpieces of famous artists whose art works are perfect in many aspects, from composition to colors. However, I didn't merely imitate them, but I tried to change in my own versions.
T: Yeah, I can absolutely see it. Though your work is similar to masterpiece, it's quite different in color and shape. Then, since when have you been interested in art?
K: I never had an experience of actually 'learning' it professionally, but from the moment I grabbed pencils, I loved art and did it continually. As I used a variety of drawing materials, like crayons, paintings, and pencils, I was so fascinated.
T: As you have been interested in art for a long time, it seems quite possible that you might want to go to art related schools. Why did you decide to apply to a foreign language high school?
K: At that time, I thought that graduating from an art related school may narrow my choice of paths in life. I came to foreign language high school to achieve my dream.
T: Oh, then what is your dream? what do you want to be?
K: I want to be a documentary director. When I was young, I simply liked art. But in my 2nd grade in middle school, I started to like films. I thought that they were fabulous in the way that they can give us auditory and visual messages. So, I wanted to make a good film like Tim Burton.
However, my thoughts changed when I was a 1st grader in GAFL. I went to Nepal for the GVT (Global Vision Trip) and saw many poor people. I was very surprised, not entirely because I was faced with a miserable reality but because of the fact that I did not know their existence. There would be a lot of people living in this world who don't know their hardship, just like me, right? So, I want to change people's thoughts and minds by giving them a message, using my talent.
T: Wow, your trip to Nepal must have been an important turning point for you. So, what do you want to major in university to realize your dream?
K: I want to major in Art&Technology.
T: There are many other majors like P.P.B.D.(Press, Pictorial, Broadcast Division-¹æ¼Û ¾ð·ÐÇкÎ) if you want to be a documentary director. Why do you want to major in art/tech?
K: Art/Tech is specified into several smaller categories, like Photographic Image or Performance Art. I want to go into Photographic Image.
T: There are many people who do not know much about art&technology. For our readers, would you please explain what exactly art/tech is and how you are preparing for it?
K: Though I'm just one of the students preparing art/tech major, I will explain it for the Topnotch readers and for all GAFLians who are interested in this field. Art&technology is literally the form of academic field art and technology combined. Its basic aim is to enable people to be a mechanic who can design, designer with technology. Steve Jobs is the most renowned person in this field.
T: Oh, I've got what 'art/tech' is. Here is our last question. As a 3rd grader, is there anything you want to say to the 1st and 2nd graders in GAFL?
K: I hope everyone works hard and enthusiastically so that they can achieve their dreams. :)
T: This is the end of our interview and thank you so much!
