GAMUN, is it really what I think it is?

 1108 ±è°¡¿µ

Colorful flags, glossy placards, and long rows of tables facing one another; this is only the beginning if you come to GAMUN.

GAMUN stands for Gyeonggi Academy Model United Nations and it hosted by the one and only Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages, more commonly referred to as GAFL. The main participants of this very honorable event are: the Chair, which are the members of the highly reputed school club, GAMUN, and of course, the delegates, all of them being proud students of GAFL, the staff members, and some press members from esteemed clubs such as TOPNOTCH, Tturak (¶ß¶ô), and GLASO.

I want to show the part of GAMUN where not the ones observing can know but what you can know by actually being in it. The only way I believe that you can do so is by actually partaking in the conference.

I represented Mexico as a delegate in the committee of United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The agenda of the day was “further enhancing methods to deal with drug cartels.” It was my first time participating in GAMUN and a lot of my friends, the majority of them being beginners as well, was in great fear that something might go wrong. I cannot say that it was an exception for myself in any way.

After the chair calls for order in the house, the house becomes absolutely silent. This is the cue for you to go “Uh, oh. What’s going on?”

After this, all delegates proceed on row calling and opening speeches, which is fine. If you consider the disorienting passing of notes and the feeling you get when you don’t know what exactly you are doing as ‘fine,’ it is totally fine.

Then moving onto the general speaker’s list. I instinctively willed myself to raise that fancy placard of mine and go up to the podium. On the podium, I was given roughly more or less than a minute to state my country’s stance and what directions the delegate wanted to take. I stuttered my way through the speech and stood went after the chair’s motion for the delegate to sit down, I returned to my seat.

The meeting then progressed smoother and easier than I had expected. Despite what I have said before, GAMUN is definitely not a scary and intimidating place. It is a stage for newcomers to learn and acquire new abilities. The chair members will guide you, especially those who are new to GAMUN. And other delegates are usually beginners themselves, so there is no need to be daunted.

The moral of day is that despite what you think, some things you will never know unless you try. As a participant of this very conference and also as the writer of TOPNOTCH, I strongly recommend for all students to endeavor in the next fall session.
