Pollution of Vernal Mountains by Hikers Deemed Serious

¾È¼¼¸®(Shery Ahn)

As spring approaches, it seems that beautiful flowers are not the only thing to grace the mountains of Korea. As more and more hikers travel to all four corners of the peninsula to admire the colorful blossom, the amount of trash is increasing. To see the vernal flowers people go picnic with their families and friends, bringing their own lunch. Not only are plastic bags, food waste and cans an eyesore, but they are also environmentally damaging. Usually, trash thrown away by tourists take a long time to degrade and can be harmful, even lethal, to animals when they eat it. However, currently, there are no specific limitations to control people from throwing away trash on the mountains. There are signs that tell people not to litter, but an official law does not yet exist. Therefore, it is recommended that both lawmakers and hikers work together to protect the mountains. Certain rules that could be established are designating a place for people to eat and throw away their trash. When they are seen eating out of this place, they would be given hefty fines. Also, in order to prevent people from feeding animals human food, vending machines, which sell animals’ food, could be installed. More importantly, people should consider the significance of clean nature whenever they hike. Then, we would be able to enjoy even more the beauty of Korean mountains all year around.
