Interview with Ms. Kim Nan Kyeong Student Reporter 1121 Hayoung Lee, 1227 Yoonmi Jo Social studies has three parts which are world geography, economics and social culture. Students at GAFL choose one subject they want to learn more about and take social studies class for one semester. We interviewed the social culture teacher in our school Ms. Kim Nan Kyeong as she often tells her students about her adventurous life. Not only that but since we both take her class, we were willing to find out what we can do to get better grades. Despite our worries, she answered all our questions in detail with a smiling face and replied to us with enthusiasm. 1. What was your first dream? My first dream was to become a painter. During my childhood, I loved drawing pictures so I hoped to grow up and become an artist. After that, I wanted to be a career woman and my last dream was to become a teacher. 2. What motivated you to join the company, IBM? As my second dream was to become a career woman, entering a firm was an unavoidable step to achieve my goal. Plus, since IBM is a well-known company, I could be really proud of myself for working at such a popular place. Not only that but I also wanted to experience social community life and cooperate with other people. IBM is a foreign corporation, so it offered me the freedom to fully display my working capacity. 3. How long have you been in GAFL? I didn¡¯t stay here long. I have been here for only 2 years. 4. What do you like about GAFL? I like how I can try out various things that fit the students¡¯ level and students follow me very well although the material is hard because they are intellect. 5. What were some fruitful moments when you were teaching students? When students follow my instructions well which are based on what I plan to teach them each day and when students manage to hand all their homework in on time. 6. What is the most difficult thing about being a teacher? Students were sometimes hurt by what I said because they misunderstood me. The students thought that I said harsh words to them because I did not favor them although everything I tell my students is for them to develop and to overcome their weaknesses. The reason I had to deal with these issues was probably because both sides had a problem with communication. This is what I had the hardest time with. 7. What is it about 1st grade students that you like better than the 2nd graders? This may not sound like a good point, but 1st graders this year have less reactions. Therefore, I can teach in a more quiet and silent environment. This greatly contributes to the speed of the class and I can teach a lot with the time I am given. 8. Why did you choose social science? I had a great interest for social studies and the various social events that happened but my grades also affected my decision. 9. What are some tips you can give us to get good grades for social science? First of all, the most important thing is to fully concentrate in class. Also, the level of importance is really important because you can get higher scores if you study the parts I emphasize in class. Lastly, you should solve many questions based on what you learn. 10. During class, you talk a lot about the different places you visited worldwide. What are some tourist attractions you would like to recommend? I want you two to go visit France and Italy if you have the chance. There are many places to sightsee in France because it has a number of cultural heritages. The Louvre Museum is so big that I was only able to look at part of it. I heard that it takes nearly one month to go around the whole museum so many people plan their visit. The places I liked best in Italy were Vatican and Venice because although they are attractive in a different way, they are both very beautiful.
