Education for all Student Reporter 2222 이유정 Fifteen years ago, representatives of numerous nations gathered in Dakar, Senegal to provide education to the human kind, to all men and women, young and old, black and white, latino and asian. They spoke of improving the quality of education, increasing the number of literate adults, extending compulsory education, and so on. Now, fifteen years have passed and a new World Education Forum 2015 in Incheon has given us the new agendas. Out of a number of agendas, one of the agendas remains unchanged, even as the years passed. This is because it was and still is an urgent matter and has not yet been solved, so the most significant agenda, in my opinion, is expanding nursery care and education. The first reason why expanding nursery care and education is important is because it supports gender equality. Nursery care was previously thought of as a women’s job in many countries, but it is now affecting their lives beyond their household. Times have changed and people sought gender equality, which brought women into the workforce. The problem is, the burden of raising a child has still not been lifted and the government is not giving much support for it. Women in many countries end up having to quit their jobs after childbirth due to the lack of basic nursery care system. After they take maternity leave, the majority of workplaces indirectly push them to resign because the corporations know that they would have to take more time off than others because of their children. These situations only occur to women because men have much less responsibility in the household when it comes to childcare, and it is a discrimination against women. If the country provides basic childcare, we would face less gender discrimination. The second reason is because it would close the economical gap between people. The problem is that nursery care without government support is extremely expensive for many. In America, paying for nursery care of two kids is more expensive than a house mortgage. This is not just a problem for developing nation, but a problem for all nations on Earth. Many families, especially socially and economically less sustainable families such as low-income families or single-parent families have problems in nursery care. Their income is not enough for nursery care, and yet to sustain their families, they must keep working. They end up not having enough time to really care for the child. In comparison to this, the rich would not have to worry about nursery care because they can afford the costly fees. Not providing basic nursery care would discriminate the poor. The third and last reason is the children’s right for education and their need for sociability. One of the basic rights of the people is the right to get education and getting free mandatory pre-school education is necessary for children to better adapt to school and the society. In addition to getting education, the children would learn sociability. They would learn to share, how to solve conflicts, or how to get along. These values are valuable and could help them adapt to the world outside of school. What is more is that education and nursery care is beneficial to both the society and the individual. Education is the base for peace and development, so it would allow the country to improve its future prospects. Basic nursery care provided by the government would surely improve the lives of millions. It would decrease discrimination against the socially weak and it would give better chances in getting opportunity for success. In addition to that, it would give children better education and better sociability. True, the cost of basic nursery care is high, but it brings much more social benefits compared to other policies. To prevent discrimination and to give the people better chances in the global society, basic nursery care would be necessary, especially for the socially weak. In addition to this, it would bring social benefits such as a stable economy or better-educated people with better values.
