Advanced Placement Exams Student Reporter 1421 ÀåÁö¿ì From May 4th to May 15th, Advanced Placement(AP) Exams took place all over the world. Students who have exceptional talent in particular subjects study beyond the highschool education. These students can take AP exams on those subjects and prove their interests on the subjects. AP exams are standardized tests which university admissions and professors trust. According to The Princeton Review, ¡°AP classes can be as challenging as introductory college courses.¡± This is why students take AP exams. When they go to college, the college recognizes the students¡¯ ability on the subject, thereby gives them credit for the introductory course of the subject. This means that the students do not have to take those introductory courses, which would lead them to faster and easier graduation. Since AP exams measures students¡¯ knowledge on the subject, it affects students¡¯ admissions to universities. Possession of a good score in an AP exam might give the student advantage when applying to universities. The score range of AP exams is one to five, one being the worst and five being the best. According to Victor Cho, one of the college counselors in Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages, from a university adimission¡¯s point of view, scoring a five would be the best, but a four is okay as well. The exams have taken place from May 4th to May 15th, and the scores will be accessible in July on apscore.org. The examination places are usually high schools, such as Gyeonggi Academy of Foreign Languages, Cheongshim International Academy, Bugil Academy, and North London Collegiate School of Jeju. This year, on May 4th, Chemistry exam was enforced at eight o¡¯ clock in the morning, and Psychology exam at noon. On May 5th, Calculus AB and BC exams were enfored at eight o¡¯ clock in the morning. On the next day morning, English Literature and Composition exam was executed. On May 14th, World History was carried out in the morning, and Macroeconomics at noon. On the next day, Microeconomics was executed in the morning eight o¡¯ clock. These are some of the most popular subjects which many students take. There are other subjects than these, such as Chinese Language and Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, Physics, European History, Music Theory, Biology, and Statistics. The most popular subject was Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. The exam lingers about two hours and twenty minutes. The exams are divided into two sections, first one being 60 multiple-choice questions with a given time of 70 minutes. Second section is composed of three free-response questions. Students are given 10 minutes of preparation time and 50 minutes of writing time for the second section. This year at GAFL, the tests have taken place on the second floor of the main hall. The alteration that was made on the policy about AP at GAFL this year compared to last year was the sanction of studying until 2 o¡¯ clock for students who take AP exams for 3 weeks before the exam. Although most people who take AP exams aim to attend foreign colleges, a number of students pusuing to attend Korean colleges study for AP exams as well. This is because since AP is standardized test, it is globally trusted and recognized. Korean universities¡¯ admission¡¯s officers also recognizes students with high valid scores of AP exams. In GAFL, currently, an AL course for Microeconomics is prepared. It is taken by Professor Jin Park
